I have a Siamese cat, and I tried both situations.

My cat gets along with my brother: she plays with him, sits on him, and asks for cuddling her.

When I travelled abroad, I asked my brother to stay at home taking care of my cat and she behaved really strange: she hide from my brother, she didn't allow him to touch her.

So, nowadays, when I go to the beach house, I take her with me. I discovered that she is more comfortable with me, in a place that she feels is quiet, without anything that can bothers her.

When I go to a new place with her, I tried to talk to her in a tender way and cuddle her the first minutes until she wants to discover the place.
When she walks around the place, I continue talking to her, calling her when she goes away of my sight, and she answers me like saying “I’m going, I’m going”.

We learned a lesson with our first cat. Because we had been dog owner we felt that boarding was the way to go. Unfortunatly we didn't discover until it was too late that cat don't like to boarded.

Cats get stressed when boarded. If there is any illness lurking in the background boarding could very well make it worse.

After that experience we asked a neighbor if she would come and and feed the cats. She readily agreed and it worked very well until she could no longer help.

We then enlisted our sister to come in and that has been fabulous. We actually wonder if the cats are disappointed wehn we get home. They have a great relation and we discovered that having a friend or relative take care of the cats was the best way to go.
