Cats are very cleanly animals. They won't contaminate anything. Brush them everyday or every other, especially if they are outdoor cats. Just check them over everyday to make sure they're healthy. The litter box thing, cats tend to clean themselves so as long as they're not licking your face or sticking your finger up they're butt, you're fine. Just wash your hands after you pet them.
