How Can I Encourage My Cat to Like My New Partner?

There is nothing like ‘cupboard love’ to modify a cat’s problem behavior towards a new partner. Nevertheless, it is not advisable for a new partner to attempt any physical interaction, such as stroking or picking up the cat. This could be seen as both threatening and an invasion of the cat’s body space. In addition, there could also be a perceived competitive aspect between the combinations male cat/female partner.

Clicker training prior to introduction can help in this situation. The partner should initially ignore the cat, then gradually, over a few days begin to be involved in introducing the clicker method of rewarding an appearance by the cat. At this time, the known partner would introduce the food treats in response to the new partner signaling with the clicker.

i think that the quickest and most sure fire way is for your new partner to start feeding them that will spark the connection between them

I’m a novice at all this, and I don’t understand the terms you’re using. What is clicker training? Or cupboard love?

Sometimes I think cats have a mind of their own and it doesn’t matter what we do, they’ll either like or not like the other humans in your life. You might find more info on Linda Mohr’s site. She’s an expert on human-cat bonding, and her book Tatianna: Tales and Teachings of My Feline Friend is very informative in addition to being a heartwarming read.

This is one of the most important test to check how compatible you are and the future of the relationship. If my cat did not like my new partner, i may break the relationship up.
