A cat that has had an excellent start in life is ideally equipped to fight off most of the physical tests that nature may offer. There are several factors involved. The cat will have:
- Started life physically healthy.
- Been fully vaccinated against the common feline infections, wormed and treated for fleas.
- Enjoyed a balanced and varied diet.
- Been encouraged to be independent and active.
With this in place, there is little reason - beyond the unexpected - why your cat should not lead a long and healthy life.
Play, stalking, play-hunting, prowling and exploration behaviours are important to a young cat and you should encourage such activities. An active cat is usually a happy cat - this aspect may actually be the most important factor in a healthy cat’s lifestyle.
Stress and physical trauma will take their toll on any cat, but the healthier it is to begin with, the better able it will be to overcome the tribals and tribulations that occur during its life.
