Making a home safe for a cat is similar to taking precautions for a young child. There are number of issues to address:
Detergents and other household chemicals
Although a cat is unlikley to lick up a solution, it could easily knock over a bottle and then walk through the split liquid. Once a chemical finds its way onto the cat’s pawa it could begin it irritate its sensitive skin or, worse, be digested when the cat attempts to clean itself. Keep all chemicals safely stored away in cupboards.
Elecric Cables
Any exposed cables are potential hazard for a playful kitten. Make sure they are not frayed, because if a kitten begins to play with an unsafe lead it can easily be electrocuted.
Windows
A cat can be given safe access to the house through a ground-floor window. Apart from this, make sure that all windows are secure. There is always the possibility that a kitten could escape through an open window on an upper floor and be seriously injured in a fall.
Sharp implements
Household items such as knives, drawing pins and needles should be kept safely out of reach of a kitten or cat inside drawers or hung on hooks on the wall.
Fireplaces
These provide access to chimneys and can become traps for an inquisitive kitten. Be sure to block them off for the first 6-12 months.
