This depends very much on the nature of the adult cat that is already a member of your family.
If it is confident, contented and non-aggressive, there is little danger of it finding a defenceless kitten too threatening, although that can all change as the kitten develops to maturity. It is advisable to allow a meeting of the two with some casual and calm supervision. If everything goes smoothly, the kitten may even curl up to the cat (replacement little mother), or an adult female cat may become maternal towards the kitten (replacement offspring). On the other hand, a nervous or insecure adult cat will initially want to see off the new intruder that is regarded as a potential competitor for food, territory and access to a loving owner. Such a nervous adult cat would need to be put in a cat carrier or crate and, with the use of a harness, exposed to the kitten very slowly and carefully over a period of time.
