This breed originated from long-haired kittens from Abyssiinian cat litters. It has a vibrant coat that shimmers due to each individual hair having multiple bands of colour. Named after the Somali African state adjacent to Ethiopia (formerly known as Abyssinia), the name indicates with the Abyssinian cat: the Somali cat is characterized as a medium- to long-haired form of the short-haired Abyssinian. This breed may actually share its roots with the Abyssinian, one of the oldest of all domesticated cats, originating from an ancient breed that now has many influences around the world.
