Why Does My Cat Bring Prey It Has Killed To Me?

July 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Once kittens are on solid food, the litter mother will carry prey back to them on a daily basis throughout her care period. In the absence of a litter to feed, a cat with a hunting personality will use this instinctive behaviour to bring home prey that it rarely needs for itself. Healthy feeding cats have more than enough energy to hunt and seem to enjoy bringing back ‘trophies’ that help to show off their skill and healthiness.

Fundamentally, your cat wants to share its kill with you just as you share yours (cat food, treats and human food) with it. The cat’s kill might be a young rabbit, bird or a mouse, but it is not really any different to what you offer your cat – just without the packaging.
